Bitwarden does the core job - store passwords, share them safely, fill them everywhere - for a fraction of what the polished competitors charge. It’s open-source and independently audited, which matters when you’re trusting one tool with every credential in the business. And it’s the only mainstream manager you can self-host, so the vault never has to leave your own servers.

We deploy Bitwarden when budget is real or when a client’s data genuinely can’t sit in someone else’s cloud. We go with 1Password instead when the deciding factor is getting non-technical people to adopt it without complaints - that’s where the extra polish pays for itself.

Who it’s really for

Small businesses that want strong security without per-seat sticker shock, technical teams comfortable with a slightly rougher interface, and any business with a data-residency requirement that rules out a pure-cloud vault. The free tier is genuinely usable for individuals, and the business tiers stay cheap.

The business tier adds the parts that matter for a team: directory sync, enforced policies, and the offboarding control that yanks access the day someone leaves - the step most SMBs forget. What to watch out for

The apps and browser extensions work well but feel a notch less polished than 1Password - adoption with non-technical staff takes a little more nudging. Self-hosting trades a subscription for operational ownership, so don’t choose it to save $40 and inherit a server. And every password manager lives or dies on the master password and recovery setup - get those right or the whole thing is decoration.

Free for individuals, and the free tier is real. Business plans run low single-digits per user per month - among the cheapest in the category - with self-hosting available at no license cost beyond your own infrastructure. For most SMBs the math against the polished competitors is hard to ignore; the question is adoption, not price.
