A password manager only works if people use it, and that’s where 1Password wins. The apps are the best in the category, the browser autofill rarely fights you, and the onboarding is quick enough that adoption actually sticks. We deploy it more than any other manager for exactly that reason - the best tool nobody uses is worth nothing.

If you’re in a regulated lane - CMMC, HIPAA, PCI - the Business tier is the one you want. It adds the reporting, provisioning, and access controls an assessor will ask about.

Who it’s really for

Small and mid-size teams that need passwords, passkeys, and the occasional shared secret in one place, without an IT person babysitting it. Watchtower flags weak and breached credentials automatically, which closes a gap most SMBs don’t even know they have.

Where it fits in your stack

It’s the front door to everything else - the place your team’s logins live. It plugs into the major identity providers for single sign-on, and the Business tier handles user provisioning so people lose access the day they leave. That offboarding step is the one most small businesses forget, and it’s the one that bites.

What to watch out for

There’s no free tier, only a trial - budget for it. Secrets automation for developers exists but is a different skill set than the consumer app, so don’t assume one covers the other. And a password manager is only as strong as the master password and the recovery setup, so get those right on day one or the whole thing is theater.

Pricing reality

Plans run per user per month, with a Business tier in the low-double-digits per seat that adds the compliance reporting and controls. For a regulated SMB, that tier isn’t optional - it’s the difference between passing the audit and explaining why you can’t. Confirm current per-seat pricing before you roll it out company-wide.
